Local Area Info
Winchester is the ancient capital of England. There has been a
settlement here since medieval times and the city is steeped in
history and interest. Its crowning glory is the Cathedral which
is within easy walking distance of the excellent shopping centre,
Winchester College and the water meadows. One minute you can be
in the centre of a busy city centre and the next in the peaceful
surrounds of the river Itchen, the water meadows and St Catherines
Hill. It is a place of contrasts.
The city has many restaurants and bars for all price ranges and
when you are tired of these a short drive to one of the surrounding
villages will often result in a good local pub with excellent food.
There is a train link to London which takes about an hour and trains
run very frequently especially during the morning and evening rush
hours. A lot of people commute daily. Road networks are excellent.
The M3 is easily accessable and leads in one direction to Basingstoke
and London and in the other direction to Southampton and the M27
which in turn leads to the New Forest and Bournemouth in the west
and Fareham, Portsmouth and Chichester in the east.
Southampton airport is a 15 minute drive from the city and Heathrow
and Gatwick are easily accessable on the M3 and M25.
The villages around Winchester are very picturesque and the small
towns of Alresford and Stockbridge easily accessible.
